Are you ready for some spring refreshment? This strawberry lip balm smells amazing and has many nourishing properties as well. Coconut oil, that is the base of this recipe, provides healing of dry skin, prevents premature aging and makes lip balm more solid, but still melting at skin touch. Beeswax is essential in this recipe because of the stability it provides. Lip balms without some type of wax are just butters/salves that can’t be carried in pockets or kept at higher temperatures. Olive oil and shea butter are also some of the most beneficial ingredients you can add, but can also be substituted with amazing avocado oil.
50% coconut oil (=15g)
23,5% beeswax (=7g)
16% olive oil (=5g)
10% shea butter (=3g)
0,5% powdered color and essential oil (5 drops)
Total amount: 30g
Optional: vitamin E for longer shelf life (I didn’t use any as this is a small batch that will be used shortly)
Combine all oils and butters except olive oil. Also, add beeswax.
Heat everything on a double boiler (over heated water).
Beeswax melts at higher temperatures, so it will be the last to melt. Stir occasionally.
When ingredients are melted, remove them from heat and add olive oil. Mix and add colors and essential oils.
Pour in clean and dry containers and leave uncapped until it cools down.
Lip balms are best stored at cooler temperatures, but you don’t need to store them in a fridge. If you plan to store them at room temperatures, use vitamin E or other antioxidants; preservatives aren’t necessary since there is no water in this formulation.
As you can see some wax hardened during pouring. This mixture isn’t lost, just reheat it and pour again. If there isn’t enough lip balm in a container, add some wax and oils and melt again. When everything is poured, heat again on a double boiler and clean with a paper towel. That’s the easiest way of cleaning since wax is quite difficult to remove with hot water. First scrape off larger pieces of wax, then heat and lastly wipe with paper towel. Also, use very hot water and clean with some dish washing detergent.
